Big Bear Outdoor Gear

We are excited to announce that we have teamed up with "Big Bear Outdoor Gear and Rentals" for upcoming events and member discounts! After speaking to the owners and getting to know Big Bear's mission, we thought a partnership would be a natural fit.

It's been a tumultuous time for small businesses, especially those that are family owned and operated, and we thought it was important to support one that is local to us. Big Bear has an extremely supportive and expert staff and will knock themselves out for their customers. If you are a newbie hiker or an experienced one, they will be happy to give you advice or guide you in all things outdoors. Plus, they are offering Hike the World members exclusive discounts.

Get to know the awesome folks at Big Bear by reading a little bit about their store below.

-----------------------------------------------

It is hard to believe that Lambertville, NJ, right on the D&R Canal Path and the Delaware River, never had an outdoor gear store before. That’s what Michael Ehrenreich and Rebecca Gelman thought when they bought a 200-year-old, 6,000 square foot former antiques barn right across from the canal. And with that they launched Big Bear Gear, an outdoor store selling gear, gifts, footwear and apparel, and offering bike and kayak rentals. Big Bear Gear looks to get more people outdoors and partners with local organizations such as The Sourland Conservancy. Big Bear Gear holds workshops and events ranging from an introduction to kayaking to making one’s own healing salves, and expects to add more programming and events in the future.

Opening a new store during a pandemic wasn’t easy, of course. Their planned opening date in April got indefinitely delayed until they were finally allowed to open in mid-June. Since then there has been strong interest in the store and the rentals as more people discover the outdoors. Exploring the barn is a bit of an adventure in itself. Spanning four levels the massive barn is constructed of enormous timbers with soaring ceilings; and it is laid out with a plethora of gear, goods, and bears.  Lots of bears. The owner’s describe the store as outdoor gear with a sense of humor. Big Bear Gear has thrived despite many other stores closing during this time. The store attributes this to its customer service, an interactive experience, and a curated selection of major brands with a unique retailing experience where gifts and novelties are merchandised with gear, apparel and footwear…and bears.

The store’s slogan is “Outside. Your Comfort Zone”, and they want all people of all abilities to be comfortable experiencing the outdoors. So start your next adventure at Big Bear Gear. Dust off the hiking shoes, or buy some new ones. Work on your outdoor skills or pick up some new ones at Big Bear Gear.
