In January 2009 I hit another roadblock. I was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome. GBS is an autoimmune disease that affects the peripheral nervous system. The pathway from the brain to your muscles is slowly cut off, leading to paralysis. I lost movement in the upper and lower extremities and, finally, the cranial (facial) muscles. My independence was gone. I had to be fed, bathed and cared for 24/7.
